Embarking on a New Chapter in Legal Education

As we embark on a new chapter in the story of the Southern California Institute of Law, we remain committed to the aspirations of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, who believed that the business of a law school is "to teach law in the grand manner and to make great lawyers."

In this new era, we are excited to announce our transition from a fixed campus facility to a completely online campus. This shift allows us to leverage the latest advancements in technology, including exploring the use of artificial intelligence in the learning process, to enhance and improve the learning and education experience for our students. By embracing these innovations, we aim to reduce costs and make legal education more accessible to anyone with the drive and determination to pursue their dreams of becoming a lawyer.

Our online campus will continue to provide students with the opportunity to explore the fundamental principles of law, develop critical analytical skills, and learn what it means to think and act like a lawyer. However, we recognize that true legal education extends beyond merely preparing students to pass the California State Bar Examination. While we acknowledge the importance of equipping our students with the technical skills they need as practitioners, we refuse to surrender intellectual rigor and serious policy discussions in favor of a narrow focus on rule-learning and memorization.

Our faculty, consistently ranked superior to excellent by independent evaluators, is dedicated to fostering a culture of learning that empowers students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between lawyers, the law, legal institutions, and the social system in which they operate. We believe that this holistic approach is essential for producing graduates who are not only competent practitioners but also responsible stewards of justice in society.

As we navigate this new frontier in legal education, we remain fortunate to have the guidance of a dedicated and prestigious Board of Directors, as well as a faculty comprised of highly skilled teachers and scholars who are committed to excellence. We are proud of our rich history, which includes hosting esteemed Commencement Speakers such as Chief Justices of the California Supreme Court, Chief Judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals, and prominent figures in the legal community.

In this fourth decade of instruction, we invite you to join us in our mission to provide a transformative legal education that is accessible, innovative, and responsive to the evolving needs of our students and society. Together, we will renew and improve upon the best of the American legal tradition, harnessing the power of technology to create a brighter future for aspiring lawyers and the communities they serve.

Stanislaus Pulle, Ph.D.
President and Dean

Introduction

Founded in 1986 by a group of distinguished legal scholars and educators, the Southern California Institute of Law (SCIL) has been at the forefront of providing accessible, high-quality legal education for over three decades. With its first classes commencing in 1987, SCIL has consistently demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence and innovation in the field of law.

For 25 years, until June 1, 2020, SCIL proudly held the status of an accredited law school. On its Silver Jubilee anniversary, the law school was honored to have the Chief Justice of California as its Commencement Speaker, a testament to the institution’s standing in the legal community. Over the years, SCIL has attracted an impressive array of keynote speakers, including three Justices of the California Supreme Court, several Presiding Justices of state appellate courts, the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and a former U.S. Solicitor General.

SCIL’s dedication to providing a comprehensive legal education has been recognized by the legal community. In an October 31, 2017 report, a State Bar Accreditation Inspection Team, which included a Chair of the Committee of Bar Examiners, found that “overall, SCIL’s curriculum, admissions, scholastic standards, faculty, library, facilities, Dean and administrators [are] all compliant in offering students a sound program of legal education.”

Prior to SCIL’s establishment, there was only one other law school serving the entire tri-county area of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. With a mission to offer the most affordable accredited legal education in California, SCIL has consistently worked to expand access to legal education, particularly for individuals from low to moderate socio-economic backgrounds.

Location and Facilities

SCIL’s campus is strategically located in the prestigious professional office district of Ventura, directly across from the Ventura County Courthouse and Law Library. The law school operates in a building formerly occupied by the state Court of Appeal, Division Six, providing students with a professional and inspiring learning environment.

Distance Learning

To accommodate the diverse needs of its students, SCIL provides law school instruction through distance learning. Classes are limited to 49 students, ensuring personalized attention and fostering a close-knit learning community.

Accreditation

The Southern California Institute of Law is a California Registered/Unaccredited Distance Learning Law School, as recognized by the Committee of Bar Examiners of The State Bar of California.

Commitment to Diversity and Non-Discrimination

SCIL is committed to promoting diversity and equal opportunity in legal education. The law school welcomes students of all genders, races, ages, colors, and national or ethnic origins, granting them equal access to the rights, privileges, programs, and activities available to all students. SCIL’s admissions policy is designed to foster a diverse student body, enriching the educational experience for all.
